The Corinth Coal Mine Methane Project consists
of the installation and operation of a methane-capture system in an abandoned coal mine in rural Illinois. The system collects and destroys methane, a greenhouse gas that is 21 times more harmful to the environment than carbon dioxide, and purifies it to pipeline-quality gas that would have otherwise escaped into the atmosphere.
Project Location:
Franklin County, Illinois
Commercial On-line Date:
June 3, 2005
Annual Emission Reduction:
180,000 metric tons carbon dioxide equivalent - the unit used to measure a quantity of greenhouse gas
Verifiable Impact of the Offset Purchase:
-
The Corinth Coal Mine Methane Project was developed to capture the greenhouse gases from an abandoned mine. The project was not required by law or local mandate; the motivation for it was purely voluntary. The methane gas is converted into clean burning pipeline-quality gas, but the gas sales revenue alone is not sufficient to make this project financially viable. The offset dollars used to purchase the Verified Emissions Reductions (VERs) make this project financially viable.
- The project is certified using the Chicago Climate Exchange Coal Mine Methane protocol and exceeds those requirements. The project is verified by Ruby Canyon Engineering, a company specializing in greenhouse gas emissions reductions and a leading verifier of offset projects.
