The National Family Dairy Farm Project is comprised of a small portfolio of dairy farms located in California, Indiana, New York, and Oregon. These National Dairy Farms feed manure into anaerobic digesters. The digesters capture methane that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere and then combust the gas as a biofuel to generate electricty. The portfolio of farms is subject to change pending annual emission reduction needs.
Project Location:
Tulare County, California
Jasper County, Indiana
Auburn, New York
Tillamook, Oregon
Commercial On-line Date:
2002-2006
Total Capacity:
450,000 ft
3 biogas per day
Annual Emission Reduction:
Up to 39,000 metric tons carbon dioxide equivalent - the unit used to measure a quantity of greenhouse gas
Verifiable Impact of the Offset Purchase:
- Agri-Waste Technology, Inc. (AWT) verifies the methane offset credits generated. AWT is an approved verifier of agricultural offset credits and uses the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) Agricultural Methane protocol.
- The dairies in the National Dairy portfolio are not required to reduce their carbon emissions; the motivation for these projects was strictly voluntary. The sale of related offsets generates revenue which makes all of these projects more profitable.
- Methane capture and destruction projects are not business as usual for dairies in the United States.
