The NetJets Climate Initiative is a comprehensive effort aimed at reducing NetJets’ impact on the environment. This initiative represents a significant commitment on our part across a number of different fronts, as well as an opportunity for NetJets Owners to get involved personally by offsetting the emissions from their NetJets flights through an optional carbon offset program.
The NetJets Climate Initiative is a multifaceted approach to address climate change and other environmental challenges, through which we are taking a leadership role in our industry. Some elements focus on today and some on tomorrow. Some will improve the efficiency of our operations and others will mitigate the unavoidable impacts of flying. In short, it is the beginning of an effort that we believe will make a real difference.
In developing the initiative, we retained the services of Esty Environmental Partners, a leader in corporate environmental strategy. We also benefited from the advice of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, a longtime NetJets Owner, and his former EPA Secretary and former Senior Advisor, both of whom are now serving on our environmental advisory board. Needless to say, our entire environmental advisory board has been extremely helpful in bringing their expertise and guidance to this effort.
The NetJets Climate Initiative marks the beginning of our ongoing commitment to fully integrate environmental concerns into our everyday business model. The four core elements of the initiative are:
Improving Energy Efficiency and Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions
NetJets set a goal to improve our energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions from our internal operations by 10% by the end of 2009, and we are working toward that goal. Our Director of Environmental Management will manage, monitor, and report regularly on our progress and ongoing challenges and help identify additional measures we can take. Changes are already being implemented at our major buildings based on engineering studies and waste assessments commissioned last year.
Driving Technological Transformation
NetJets is investing in cutting-edge research to identify more environmentally-friendly aviation technologies by sponsoring The Next Generation Jet Fuel Project at Princeton University with the University of California, Davis to develop an ultra-low emission jet fuel.
Offsetting Unavoidable Impacts
NetJets is investing in a set of carefully-reviewed and closely-monitored carbon offset projects that will provide verified greenhouse gas reductions. These projects will allow NetJets to offset fully the carbon footprint of our internal operations. The offset portfolio will also be available to all NetJets Owners so that you can voluntarily offset the emissions of your NetJets flights. Additionally, Marquis Jet Partners is making the NetJets carbon offset portfolio available to Marquis Jet Card Owners.
Leveraging World-Class Expertise
To ensure NetJets is and remains at the forefront of climate issues, we will consult with our environmental advisory board. The board consists of environmental experts who are helping us systematically reduce our environmental impact and apply best-in-class environmental management practices.
