NEWTON-MCDONALD LANDFILL GAS CAPTURE PROJECT
The Newton-McDonald Landfill Gas Capture Project consists of a closed landfill in Neosho, Missouri. The project captures methane in 57 vertical and horizontal wells and feeds it through a series of pipes to a central gas flare.

Project Location:
Neosho, Missouri

Commercial On-line Date:
September 2007

Annual Emission Reduction:
Average 40,000 metric tons carbon dioxide equivalent - the unit used to measure a quantity of greenhouse gas

Verifiable Impact of the Offset Purchase:
  • The landfill is not mandated to capture and flare methane from its operations.

  • The landfill began destroying gas in 1998 but was shut down in May 2007 due to lack of funds for operations and maintenance. In September 2007, Solid Waste Properties (SWP) purchased and restarted the collection system in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and sell emission reductions. SWP receives no other revenue from the project.

  • The emission reductions will be verified by an accredited third party verifier using the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) Landfill Methane Protocol. All verified emission reductions will be registered on the CCX.
