Seven luxurious autumnal city breaks

Travel in style with NetJets this season
As summer draws to an end, we welcome cooler, crisp autumn days coloured by the burnt orange and flaming red of falling leaves and roaring fires. After long, sweltering summer days spent trying to stay cool, autumn brings a welcome respite from the heat and the perfect time for a city escape. While most of Europe’s cities are rammed during the summer months, come autumn, the majority of the tourists have returned home. Cooler weather and quieter streets make it the perfect season for exploring before the chill of winter settles in.

This autumn, why not spend a spontaneous weekend away exploring the cultural delights of Rome, the architectural magnificence of Barcelona, the buzzing night-life of Dublin, or another European city gem? With NetJets, you’re able to book a flight with as little as 10 hours’ notice, leaving you free to make plans at the last-minute.

Here are seven cities that should be on your radar:

Barcelona is well-known as one of the best European cities to head to for a summer beach break. However, autumn is by far the better time to go, as while the warm weather lingers, the heaving crowds retreat, leaving the city ripe for exploration. No longer limited by the sweltering heat, you’ll be able to wander the streets to your heart’s content, discovering the city’s art galleries, independent shops, charming bistros and authentic tapas bars.

Closest airport: Barcelona

Autumn is the perfect time to visit the Czech capital. Stroll through the cobblestone lanes of the charming Old Town and admire the Baroque and neo-renaissance architecture, taking in the skyline of gothic spires aglow in the autumnal light.

Beyond the picture-perfect façade, you’ll discover cool bars, a growing art scene and buzzing nightlife, all alongside cultural spots such as Kafka's house and the Mozart Museum.

Closest airports: Prague Vaclav Havel, Vodochody, Prague Kbely

Rome's Mediterranean climate means that this incredible city stays pleasantly warm long into the autumn. The city is quieter and easier to explore as all the summer sightseers have departed, Italian children are back at school, and the city has settled back into a calm routine.

Rome is the city that keeps drawing you back due to the sheer volume and beauty of its architecture and history. For first-timers, the palazzos of Via Margutta, the Turtle and Trevi Fountains, the church of San Carlo and, of course, the Colosseum, cannot be missed.

Closest airports: Rome Ciampino, Rome Fiumicino International

A relative new comer to the scene, Oslo is quickly catching up with other Scandi cities as the ‘cool’ place to go. With exciting things happening in its design, culture and food scenes, autumn is a great time to visit the city.

Oslo is perfect for an active autumn break – head out to explore the multitude of parks, beautiful beaches and stunning mountains extremely popular with hikers. If that’s not your thing, spend your days exploring the exquisite 19th-century architecture and fantastic art museums.

Closest airport: Oslo Gardermoen

Amsterdam offers the best of both worlds when it comes to a city break. Small enough to walk or cycle around, it has the excitement and activity of a big city with its astonishing assortment of art galleries and cultural offerings. Explore the city’s picturesque canals and bridges (which look particularly glorious with the colour of the falling autumn leaves) before retreating to a cosy café for steaming hot coffee and stroopwafel.

Closest airport: Amsterdam Schiphol

You won’t find a more festive city break than Dublin. The Irish are well-known for their propensity for a pint, and there is nothing better than settling into a cosy pub with a creamy Guinness in hand and a live band playing traditional foot-stomping folk music. With a number of great galleries and museums, trendy independent shops, and an incredible foodie scene focused around Temple Bar and the side-streets near the Powerscourt Townhouse, there’s plenty to keep you busy in the capital of the Emerald Isle.

Closest airport: Dublin

Berlin is a blaze of colour in the autumn as the city’s numerous parks, gardens and tree-lined streets turn red, orange and yellow. Make the most of this by taking a walk around the rambling Tiergarten, the Sunday flea market at Mauerpark and the Volkspark Friedrichshain.

Enjoy the city’s wealth of history and visit its impressive museums and historical sites - take in the art at various galleries spread across the city, or shop in one of the many independent boutiques.
