As we draw closer to the end of one of the most glorious summers in memory, families across the continent are heading off to soak up the last of the sun’s rays. With so many options available on the continent, deciding where to go can be difficult. These five remarkable destinations are each uniquely different, offering everything from dazzling beaches to staggering mountain landscapes, rich historical landmarks to innovative culinary scenes, and everything in between. With plenty on offer to keep young children entertained, they are all well suited for a family escape.

While making the decision of where to go is a challenge, deciding how to get there is easy. With NetJets, your journey will be smooth and seamless from start to finish as we take care of every need and desire your family has. From effortless boarding, to personalised service onboard, we tailor your experience to make your journey as easy as possible – a necessity when traveling with young children.

Here are our top five European destinations for a summer holiday:

The Algarve

Sunny all year long, the Algarve is known for having some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe and is the ideal region to spend a summer exploring with your family.

Discover stretches of long sandy beaches along the coast from the Spanish border to Albufeira, as well as protected lagoons and sandy islands from Tavira to Faro. Enjoy the sun-drenched Ilha da Fuseta and Praia do Carvalho, famous for its sea caves and widely considered one of our best beaches in Portugal.

After spending time on the beach, explore the local culture and pay a visit to Faro and the Natural Park of Ria Formosa, where you’ll find the fascinating old town and a number of museums.

Alternatively, head to the west coast of the Algarve where you’ll find incredible natural landscapes with striking rock formations, deserted beaches and a variety of wildlife in an environmentally protected area largely unaffected by tourism. Secluded and serene, this is the ideal place to get away from the stress of everyday life.

With stunning scenery and a multitude of different activities on offer, Malta is the place to be. Thanks to its prime location in the Mediterranean, it has over 300 days of sunshine a year and boasts one of the best climates on the continent. Whether you prefer to spend your time relaxing and unwinding on a peaceful beach, hiking in the hills, or taking in the rich wealth of history on offer, there’s something for everyone.

For a sense of the nation’s history, visit the extraordinary Neolithic temples of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra – these UNESCO World Heritage sites are even older than Egypt’s pyramids – or the Silent City of Mdina. Soak up the culture in Valletta which was voted the European Capital of Culture in 2018 before making your way to St George’s Bay (a short 20-minute drive from Valletta) for some of the best views around.

Puglia, in the heel of Italy’s boot, is one of the best family-friendly spots to enjoy an Italian summer. With no end of immaculate beaches, the Salento Peninsula is particularly spectacular and well-worth a visit. The Gargano Peninsula is a gem for kids, with mythical forests, caves, shrines, coastal watchtowers and fishing villages all waiting to be explored.

Move inland to the countryside where you’ll see the magical trulli – the small limestone dwellings with conical roofs that the area is famous for. Visit the UNESCO-protected Alberobello to see them in full-force. With a burgeoning foodie scene, Puglia’s cuisine is worth a visit alone, offering top-quality local produce and authentic Italian home cooking.

Brindisi Casale

Lush and green, Corfu is a calm and gentle sanctuary. With its stunning cliff-backed bays, forested coves, pretty villages, rambling olive groves and glorious villas, it is the ideal family retreat.

Hire a villa and spend your days exploring the island, relaxing on one of the beautiful beaches (Myrtiotissa, Egremni, Porto Katsiki, and Kathisma are just a few worth mentioning), or take to the water on a private boat and visit the secluded coves. Try your hand at windsurfing or sailing if you’re feeling active.

If you’re after something different from the beach and sunshine this summer, Iceland is one Europe’s most unique holiday destinations.

The rugged landscape is fascinating, and you can explore the multitude of volcanoes, hot springs, waterfalls and more. Discover the surrounding areas on a number of day trips where you can visit areas on the “Golden Circle” route and the ethereal Blue Lagoon where you can swim in the steamy, warm water.
