Fascinating Wimbledon Facts

One of the oldest sporting events in the world, Wimbledon has a long and rich history.
Widely considered one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world, Wimbledon provides two weeks of incomparable competition and sportsmanship. First held in 1877, and one of the oldest sporting events in the world, it has an incredibly rich and interesting history.

Here are just some of the most remarkable facts concerning the Championship:

#1

Wimbledon is the only grand slam played on grass
One of the most difficult surfaces to play on. Over the course of the tournament, the grass is cut to a height of exactly 8mm to ensure the very best conditions for play.

#2

The tournament is the only grand slam with a strict all-white dress code
Players’ outfits must be approved by the club before the tournament commences – a rule that began in the late 1800s when it was considered inappropriate to see sweat patches on players’ clothing. As coloured clothing shows sweat more clearly, “tennis whites” were the order of the day.

#3

The longest match played in the history of Wimbledon lasted a gruelling three days
With a total match time of 11 hours and five minutes. John Isner and Nicolas Mahut completed this epic battle in their 2010 first round match. Isner eventually claimed victory in the final set with 70 games to Mahut’s 68.

#4

Originally, the tennis balls used at Wimbledon were white
They were changed to yellow in 1968 so they could be seen more clearly on television.

#5

Strawberries and cream
Wimbledon is famous for strawberries and cream with hundreds of thousands of portions served over the two weeks. Only the highest quality, freshest strawberries are accepted. They are picked daily in Kent at 4.00am and delivered to the Club by 11.00am for inspection and hulling.
