Formula 1’s Legendary Family-Run Team

Getting to Know Williams F1
Williams are a team unlike any other in Formula 1. They’re the last great, independent, family-owned F1 team, surviving in a sport that’s evolving at an insatiable velocity.

Led by the legendary Sir Frank Williams and his daughter Claire, Williams have been leading competitors since the late 1970s, boasting one of the sport’s most impressive track records. Despite almost 30 fewer years in the sport, Williams have famously won nine constructors’ titles (second only to Ferrari’s 16) and made world champions of Alan Jones, Keke Rosberg, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve.

In the early-1980s to mid-1990s, Williams forged dominant technical partnerships with engine manufacturers Honda, then Renault, attracting the best engineers and the wealthiest sponsors.

As a family, we remain the majority shareholders of Williams – it’s been within our family for over four decades now. The sacrifices our family has made for the team over the years have been great – but we’ve also had enormous reward and feel hugely privileged to be involved in this amazing sport.

Today, NetJets are proud to be an official supplier of ROKiT Williams Racing. While the team have recently been experiencing a tough period, their passion and commitment to the sport remains undefeated. Despite the setbacks and disappointments, Williams’ fans remain dedicated to the team, largely due to the sheer heart and authenticity of the team. Formula 1 matters to Williams perhaps more than it does to any of their rivals, and it’s this authenticity that has endeared them to fans over the decades.

No team, with the exception of Ferrari, have ever been able to tug the heartstrings quite like Williams and giving up and selling out is not an option for Claire, the team’s Deputy Team Principal.

We’re in Formula 1 because we love going motor racing and we are ensuring we create a world at Williams that keeps our team viable and relevant in this sport and maintains our status within it. That’s hugely important to me because motor racing is at our heart. It’s just what we do.
