Everything You Need to Know About the Laver Cup
The Remarkable Tournament Now Entering Its Third Year
Roger Federer & TEAM8
The event was created by tennis champion Roger Federer and his management firm TEAM8 in an effort to honour the legendary Rod Laver, a trail-blazing player who led the way to today’s Open Era of tennis.
It was only established in 2017, with the first event taking place in Prague and the second in Chicago. This year’s tournament will take place on the signature black court of the Palexpo in Geneva.
The tournament takes place over three days every September, pitting Team Europe vs Team World. Each team comprises six elite players and an iconic coach - Björn Borg leads Team Europe and John McEnroe heads Team World.
Every day sees four best-of-three-set matches – three singles and one doubles match. The scoring system is unique and designed for maximum drama, leaving the competition wide open until the final day. Each win is worth one point on Friday, two points on Saturday and three points on Sunday. The first team to earn 13 points out of a possible 24 wins the Laver Cup.
Unlike traditional tournaments which encourage silence during play, the Laver Cup encourages fans, players and captains to express themselves. Microphones near the captain’s couch and players’ bench amplify tactical advice, and other technology – including camera angles behind the returner and mini- cameras embedded near the service line – further serve to break down the barriers that can exist between athlete and audience.
The tournament has attracted an enviable portfolio of sponsors, including NetJets, Rolex, Credit Suisse, Mercedes-Benz and more.
