Matthew Day Jackson for Art Basel

NetJets collaborates with renowned painter, sculptor, and photographer
2019 marks the eighteenth year that NetJets has been an Associate Partner of Art Basel. Every year we commission an artist to create an installation to be displayed during the show in the NetJets VIP area in the Art Basel Collectors Lounge.

This year, we’re proud to have partnered with the world-renowned American painter, sculptor, and photographer Matthew Day Jackson to create a thought-provoking installation.

Art Basel Installation

In the NetJets VIP Lounge, located in the Art Basel Collectors Lounge, we will be displaying a selection of Jackson’s paintings alongside pieces from his furniture collection, made in collaboration with Finnish design house Made by Choice. The collection is inspired by images of the moon taken from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, launched in 2009 in honor of the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing.

Matthew Day Jacksons’ ‘Solipsist’ paintings depict aerial views of colorful, silkscreened Formica landscapes, with satellites cast in poured lead that give the appearance of hovering above. The series questions the self-referential nature of satellites, and Jackson’s observation that, ‘despite how far we have travelled, we are looking back in on ourselves, rather than investigating where we are going’. The collection is particularly topical as each painting depicts landscapes that are disappearing or transforming due to the impact of climate change.

Alongside the artwork, visitors can admire Jackson’s striking furniture collection, ‘Kolho’, created as part of a collaboration between Jackson, Made by Choice and Formica Group. Jackson specially designed the furniture’s Formica surface to subtly replicate to scale the surface of the moon.

The locations were selected through hours of looking at astronaut photography and I was fascinated by what they thought was interesting. I found very few images looking out into space—it seemed they were unanimously interested in looking back at earth. So, with that, Solipsists were born in the seemingly incessant need to photograph earth and see ourselves in relation to the world around us, to offer self-reflection.
