AN INTERVIEW WITH RICHARD WEEKS, DIRECTOR OF SAFETY & COMPLIANCE AT NETJETS

FROM THE AIRCRAFT WE FLY, TO THE PILOTS WE EMPLOY. WITH NETJETS, YOU’RE IN SAFE HANDS. WE CATCH UP WITH DIRECTOR OF SAFETY & COMPLIANCE, RICHARD WEEKS ABOUT OUR OUTSTANDING COMMITMENT TO SAFETY.
How does NetJets ensure optimal safety for its Owners?
Top of NetJets key business principles are Safety and Integrity. Safety is part of NetJets’ DNA and it is vital that it is understood and ‘alive’ throughout the organisation.

We have a dedicated Quality and Safety Review team that constantly monitor future flight requests to ensure that every aspect, such as airport status, weather, aircraft performance, etc. are assessed and controlled. We have a dual release process that ensures every flight is double-checked by both the commander and a licensed dispatcher before final release is given.

Our Maintenance department track the reliability of the aircraft and introduces additional engineering inspections over and above the manufacturers’ requirements where we believe it is necessary. We have a dedicated team that evaluates every requested destination to ensure that we can provide safe access to as many destinations as possible. These are just a few examples of our focus on our Owner’s safety.

How does NetJets match against competitors with regards to safety?
There are many safe operators in the business aviation world but not every operator has the financial backing and commitment of an organisation like Berkshire Hathaway.

NetJets prides itself on reliably providing access to the airport you want at the time you want. The last thing we want to do is say ‘no’. When we do have to say ‘no’, it is in the genuine interest of our Owner’s safety (and the safety of our team members). Such a decision can be frustrating, especially if they see another operator continuing to fly. However, they can rest assured that we have made that decision as a result of a proper risk assessment and we would not be restricting our operation without a very good reason.

What is even more important is that when we say ‘yes’, our Owners can relax and feel comfortable that they are travelling with the NetJets enhanced safety standards and practices.

What level of training do the pilots receive, who trains them, and how often?
We want our Owners to have absolute confidence in our pilots’ ability. All our pilots start their career with NetJets as a first officer – whatever their background. Even if they are an experienced airline captain or a top fighter pilot, they will start in the co-pilot seat. In addition, we only allow our pilots to fly one aircraft type. We want them to know their aircraft inside out and be able to respond intuitively to any possible situation.

We have developed our own bespoke training programme with the industry leader in business aviation pilot training, FlightSafety International. This training programme is revised every 6 months and incorporates input from several frontline teams including, Safety, Flight Operations, Crew Standards and the flight data monitoring programme.

How is the NetJets pilot training different from other airlines?
Our pilots complete significantly more simulator training than the average airline pilot. We insist on providing more than the basic legal requirements so that we can enhance the safety of our operations to challenging airports and provide thought-provoking scenarios for our pilots to manage.

We have our own in-house training programme specially developed to transition our first officers to captain. This involves a comprehensive ground school phase and exams before they move on to the challenge of the simulator sessions. These sessions are conducted in our own simulator in our training centre in Lisbon.
