A vineyard built on history
In 1992, Rich Frank, former president of Disney Studios and current vice chairman and executive board member of the American Film Institute, purchased the history-laced Larkmead Winery from previous owner Hanns Kornell. Mr. Kornell was a German immigrant who had been making sparkling wines on the property since 1958 under the name Hanns Kornell Champagne Cellars. The acquisition was accompanied by a classic Tudor home on more than 380 acres in Napa Valley’s Rutherford AVA. Mr. Frank recognized the potential for creating something great—again. And it’s here where he combined his desire for a lasting legacy with a passion for making great wine.
As in its earlier days, the Larkmead building is filled with high-stacked barrels and a rich bouquet of aging wines. Frank Family Vineyards honors the building's history by continuing to handcraft four sparkling wines using the traditional méthode champenoise in addition to producing superb cabernet and chardonnay. From the third-oldest winery built in Napa Valley wine country, Frank Family Vineyards produced just 200 cases in their first year; now, the highly recommended vineyard draws visitors from across the world and produces nearly 75,000 cases a year. As for the iconic Larkmead building itself, it is now considered an archetype of California’s wine country—appearing on the National Register of Historical Places.
Though sparkling wine makes up much of the history of Frank Family Vineyards, the winery has become known for so much more. Having just celebrated its 25th anniversary, and thanks to owners and proprietors Rich and Leslie Frank’s daily commitment to the winery, Frank Family Vineyards has become a leading producer in Napa Valley.
