Flying During the COVID-19 Pandemic

While today’s world seems to be evolving daily, we remain solidly focused on our top priority: the safety of our Owners and our employees. That has been at the forefront of every decision made in our 55+ years—and especially now during this unique time. We want you to know this, as well as the answers to the following questions regarding the state of our business and what we are doing to put safety first as we continue flying during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Is it safe to fly—how are you changing your operations to mitigate the spread of COVID-19?”

NetJets’ Answer: As we continue to complete hundreds of flights a day, we do it while taking every precaution possible. We’ve appointed a COVID-19 Joint Response Team consisting of cross-business experts. This specialized team meets regularly to discuss relevant operational information, provide guidance to our staff, and make updates to our COVID-19 Response Plan. In addition, our approach includes the following measures:
  • Travel restrictions based on guidance from the U.S. Department of State, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and World Health Organization (WHO)
  • Ongoing polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing for crewmembers, the current benchmark in COVID-19 testing
  • A multi-tiered aircraft cleaning and disinfecting program
  • Pre-flight passenger screening
  • COVID-19 antibody testing for NetJets employees
  • Social distancing measures that include the following:
    • Altering crew-passenger-employee interactions
    • Providing face coverings for all crewmembers
    • Drastically limiting commercial travel for crewmembers

“How are you cleaning your aircraft?”

NetJets’ Answer: Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen our cost for cleaning per aircraft increase dramatically. In 2020, we invested more than $16M in our global response to COVID-19. (That’s more than some private jet charter companies have in annual revenue.) We mitigate the spread of COVID-19 by applying a rigorous, multi-tiered cleaning and disinfecting program, officially referred to as The NetJets CleanTM.

All aircraft interiors are treated with an antimicrobial barrier that bonds to surfaces providing lasting protection from various bacteria, germs, and viruses like the coronavirus. Its durability comes from the molecular bond it forms with surfaces once cured; however, as a safeguard, NetJets reapplies the product at least every 90 days. Prior to selecting this specific treatment, we meticulously researched nearly 100 different disinfecting products and issued this as superior in both application and longevity.

To prevent viral spread and ensure passengers board a pristine, mission-ready aircraft, surfaces are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected after each flight with a product that is EPA-approved and effective at killing the COVID-19 virus. Any NetJets aircraft that return from a region identified by the CDC as high risk are immediately quarantined and professionally cleaned.

“Is the cabin air quality safe for flying during the pandemic?”

NetJets’ Answer: Many travelers have a common misconception about the air on the aircraft—they often think it is not refreshed, but rather recirculated. All of our aircraft replace cabin air with fresh outside air every two to four minutes, depending on the fleet. For comparison, most office buildings only do this every 15 to 20 minutes.

“How are you protecting crewmembers and employees?”

NetJets’ Answer: Our goal is to enable social distancing and drastically limit commercial travel for crewmembers. By clustering aircraft at base locations where we have a high concentration of crewmembers, we enable crew to report for duty and return home via their personal vehicle or a NetJets aircraft as often as possible rather than by commercial airlines. Additionally, all crew travel is closely monitored; those exposed in any manner are prohibited from entering NetJets facilities and aircraft for 14 days and until they are no longer symptomatic.

100% of our crewmembers have been tested for COVID-19. Today, we are providing ongoing polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing, which is highly sensitive and the current benchmark in COVID-19 testing. In addition, we proactively test anyone who travels to high-risk locations, has been exposed to COVID-19, or becomes symptomatic.

During stay-at-home orders, a work-from-home program was established for a vast majority of our office employees. For those who need to report to the office to complete their duties, we have taken extra steps to mitigate risks with additional disinfecting methods and increased spatial distance. All employees, including our pilots and flight attendants, know that they do not need to worry about their paycheck if they require quarantine and/or medical attention due to a COVID-19 diagnosis.

“Is your business financially stable?”

NetJets’ Answer: After more than 55 years, NetJets continues to be the global leader in private aviation and the favored choice of the world’s most elite travelers. That’s because our industry-leading scale and business model, all backed by Berkshire Hathaway, allow us a financial sustainability that is completely dependable—and unlike any other in the industry.
